Ms Azizan Mohd Isa
Ms Azizan Mohd Isa
Ms. Azizan Mohd Isa was born in October 1968. She began her nursing journey by earning a Diploma in Nursing from KL Nursing College in 1990, followed by a Post Basic Oncology Nursing Certificate in 2002. She furthered her academic qualifications with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Critical Care) from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2006 and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2013.
Her professional development includes a Post Basic Certificate in Hematology Care (Bone Marrow Transplant) completed in 1997 in Sydney, Australia, under a JPA scholarship. In 2013, she also obtained a Certificate in World Enterostomal Therapy Nursing (ET) from University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) under a KKM scholarship. She later completed the ASCO Palliative Care Course (KKM, 2022) and was awarded the Certificate of Training of Trainers (TTT) (No. 17757) by HDRc Malaysia in 2025.
Teaching has always been her passion, allowing her to share her extensive knowledge and clinical expertise. After retiring in 2021 as an Oncology Nursing Tutor under the Ministry of Health (KKM), Ms. Azizan continues to contribute to the profession. She currently serves as a freelance lecturer, facilitator, and trainer for the Training of Trainers (ToT) Program and Basic Cancer Care Workshops (JKN KKM), and as an external lecturer for the Post Basic Oncology Nursing Programme at International Medical College (IMC).

Under his leadership, LCNM has pioneered several national firsts including: a digital patient guide, a counselling tool for specialists and the first-ever CPG for lung cancer in Malaysia. through the development of novel treatment approaches, focusing on head and neck cancers. Her
work includes the development of immunotherapy and the use CRISPR-Cas9 essential screens to
identify novel targets for head and neck cancer. In addition, she also focuses on early detection using
innovative strategies including the development of novel mobile health tools such as MeMoSA®,
enabling early detection of oral cancer. She has received grants from national and international
funding bodies including the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund, Newton Fund Impact Scheme, Global
Challenges Research Fund and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation SMART Fund,
amongst others. In recognition of her research contributions, she has received several national and
international scientific awards, including the President’s Award by the International Association of Oral
Maxillofacial Pathologist (IAOP), the 8th Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-US Science Prize for

Associate Professor (Dr) Gokula is currently practicing as consultant Radiation Oncologist at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Penang Adventist Hospital. He completed the 5-year consultant Radiation Oncology training in 2013 under the Royal Australian and New Zealand College Of Radiologists (RANZCR) during which periods he worked at the National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore and William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre, Alfred Health, Melbourne.
His primary interest is brachytherapy for liver and tongue. The novel HyBIRT radiotherapy technique for tongue cancer treatment was developed by USM team lead by Prof Gokula. The clinical outcome of the HyBIRT prospective study were presented as a proffered paper at ESTRO2023, ESTRO2024 and ESTRO2025. In the ESTRO2025, the HyBIRT technique received further international recognition and was awarded the top 5% of abstracts at the conference.

Maheswari Jaganathan, RN, SCM, CLT, CPN, BSN, is a nurse by profession—but a system changemaker by calling. With more than 23 years of experience in oncology, lymphedema therapy, palliative care, and patient navigation, she currently serves as the Deputy Head of the Community Outreach Unit at Cancer Research Malaysia. Maheswari co-founded and led the development operationalization of Malaysia’s first Breast Cancer Patient Navigation Programme, which has since transformed care across eight public hospitals, supporting over 5,000 newly diagnosed women since 2015. By integrating patient navigation programme in the management breast cancer patients, the program has significantly improved the timeliness in diagnosis, completion of recommended treatment, reduced defaulters and increase the supportive care for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in state referral centres. Her work received internationally recognition in Oct 2024, the World Health Organization cited her model in its “Patient Navigation for Early Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer - Technical Brief as a benchmark for delivering comprehensive breast cancer care. In a global recognition of her visionary impact, her appointment as an Acumen Malaysia Fellow in 2020, joining a global network of 2000+ bold, moral leaders who are tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice. Recently she expanded her business by opening up a Care Centre to train patients and relatives.
She obtained a certificate in Initiative Chronic Wound from Hamburg, Germany and had her clinical in hospital around Germany. She received full scholarship to attend Leadership program in Global Nursing leadership Institute in Geneva, Switzerland.

He is an NMRC funded Senior Clinician Scientist and Principal Investigator (PI) of the NMRC National Flagship Program in Liver Cancer, the PLANet study. He is also funded by BMRC to conduct, in collaboration with industry, the prospective cohort study of patients at high risk of developing liver cancer (ELEGANCE). He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and has published in the Lancet, Cell, JCO, Nature Cancer, Journal of Hepatology, Gut and other top journals.
Besides clinical work and research, Pierce is also very active in medical education. He is the inaugural and current director of the PhD Program in Clinical and Translational Science at the Duke-NUS Medical School Singapore. He was the inaugural director of the pre-clinical Normal Body course in the same medical school and the founding president of the College of Clinician Scientists at the Academy of Medicine Singapore.
Pierce is Protocol Chair of the Asia-Pacific Hepatocellular Carcinoma (AHCC) Trials Group and has conducted 12 prospective multi-center clinical studies that has enrolled more than 5000 patients from 62 sites across 17 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific.
